Chapter 1: My Career Gone

Footnote: Projects Index

Here are the main projects on which I have worked. I originated and completed most of them on my own from start to finish. Projects are listed by: Mode of Employment, Application Area and Type of Work

1) by Mode of Employment
1966-1976 Projects I did as a student
1966-1976 Projects I did as a corporate employee
1976-1991 Projects I did as a self-employed programmer
1976-1991 Projects I did as a self-employed technical writer
1976-1991 Projects I did as a self-employed software developer
1991-2001 Projects I did as an unemployed layabout

2) by Application Area
Business, Science, Telecommunications, Navigation, Word Processing, System Software. These exclude the personal projects I have done to keep my skills up to date since I have been unemployed.

Business Software: The main areas of business software with which I have been involved are contacts management, accounting, and various bits of bespoke work. I have also written software related sections of PC user guides. My pure software projects have been: My own contact management product: Marketeer, An equipment life cycle register for Jaguar Communications plc, A news wholesalers data gathering system for News Technology Ltd, A sales order report generator for Jaguar Communications plc, Documentation of the ITT 2020 Accountant package, Writing the software section of the ITT 3030 User Guide, Decompiling Bell Telephone's Tendering & Ordering system. I have also implemented bespoke turnkey systems for two small businesses, namely: An accounting suite for Sparshatts — a commercial vehicle dealer, and a bespoke payroll system for Gaffney's — a toy manufacturer

Science: I have always had a keen interest in science. My academic and employment history includes work on: precision distance measurements using laser interferometry, The erosion characteristics and circuit transients of electrical contacts, The mapping of radiation patterns of proprietary radio aerials, The measurement of radio interference produced by electrical appliances

Telecommunications: In telecommunications, I have done programming and documentation for both voice and data systems, in both the public and private sectors, involving both PSTN and ISDN technologies. Specific projects include: software overview of the ITT System 1240 public ISDN exchange, the call processing software for the ITT Metaconta 10C exchange, a trunk traffic measurement facilities for the ITT Metaconta 10C Toll, the ITT System 710 voice/data store-and-forward message switch, a national private data communications network for British Steel, a bespoke X25 network management suite for Jaguar Communications, a case for telecommunications infrastructures in Third World economies and a draft article on the ITT exhibition stand at Telecom 83

Navigation: In the area of navigation I have programmed flight simulators, documented an air traffic control flight plan processing system. The two flight simulator subsystems with which I have been most heavily involved are: nav and com radio aids and flight director computer and instrumentation.

Word Processing: I have been involved with word processing since long before it became generally known. My main projects in this area have been: a compilation of early ideas on word processing, a text processing system for the ITT Technical Publications Centre and Author's Delight: my own first computerised authoring aid.

System Software: I have documented: an Ada Development Tool for the ITT Engineering Support Centre and a generic linker-editor for ITT System 1240 software development. I have also written and produced a technical marketing brochure on a proprietary COBOL soft machine compiler/run-time system for Alpha Systems Ltd of Bedford.

3) Projects by Type of Work:
Full Programming Projects, System Design-Only Projects, Technical Writing Projects, Other Types of Projects. These exclude the personal projects I have done to keep my skills up to date since I have been unemployed.

Full Programming Projects: navigation programs for flight simulators, Author's Delight: my own first computerised authoring aid, my own financial and accounting products, an accounting suite for Sparshatts - a commercial vehicle dealer, a bespoke payroll system for Gaffney's - a toy manufacturer, an equipment life cycle register for Jaguar Communications plc, a news wholesalers data gathering system for News Technology Ltd, a sales order report generator for Jaguar Communications plc, a bespoke X25 network management suite for Jaguar Communications plc.

System Design-Only Projects: a text processing system for the ITT Technical Publications Centre and a compilation of early ideas on word processing.

Technical Writing Projects: air traffic control flight plan processing system, the call processing software for the ITT Metaconta 10C exchange, trunk traffic measurement facilities for the ITT Metaconta 10C Toll, the ITT System 710 voice/data store-and-forward message switch, a national private data commuications network for British Steel, technical marketing brochure on a proprietary COBOL soft machine, decompiling and documenting Bell Telephone's Tendering & Ordering system, an Ada Development Tool for the ITT Engineering Support Centre, a generic linker-editor for ITT System 1240 software development, documentation of the ITT 2020 Accountant package, writing the software section of the ITT 3030 User Guide, software overview of the ITT System 1240 public ISDN exchange, draft article on theITT exhibition stand at Telecom 83, a case for telecommunications infrastructures in Third World economies.
